On day 315, Oliver had gotten ready for Thanksgiving dinner and was looking quite handsome in his Thanksgiving sweater. So, being the good and responsible parent that I am, I took some photos of Oliver instead of getting ready myself! I mean, really, you would have done the same thing in my shoes right? RIGHT? LOL! There are a couple of portraits that came out of this quick session that have become my favourites! Oliver is so grown up now!

oliver connell | day one hundred & fifty-four

Once again, Oliver and I had the morning to ourselves. Dana was off getting her hair done at Salon Soho in Sherway Gardens (see James, tell them Dana sent you Hahaha!) and Oliver and I had some fun together.

My Father speaks very highly of this one memory he has of when I was a little boy. He fondly tells the story of the first time he saw these little eyes peer over the coffee table at him. He said I pulled myself up, and all he could see were these tiny eyes, and then I came up a little further, grinning ear-to-ear. So with Father’s day quickly approaching, I thought I would try to recreate that scene, but now with two generations of Connells. I set up my camera on a tripod, set the timer for 10 seconds, and then ran around the other side of the table holding Oliver up at just the last second before the shutter opened and closed. It took a couple of tries, but I was very happy with the end result. And needless to say, my Father loved the gift.

More candid photos! Don’t you just love them? This morning we spent some time in Oliver’s room, playing on the floor and just snapping the camera when we wanted. Towards the end of the session, we took a couple “posed” portraits, but for the most part – it was just us, relaxing and enjoying the day. Dana took a couple of pictures of Oliver and I (seen toward the end of this post) which I just absolutely love! Good work hun!

So what happens when Mum leaves early on a Saturday morning to get her hair cut? Well, Daddy and Son will play, that’s what happens! On this particular morning, I had another vision of what to do with Oliver, but I didn’t know if he was going to be cooperative. Turns out, he was an absolute star! We got some shots of Oliver in different poses, in different hats (and touques), and we even got a couple of pics of Oliver sitting contently in our laundry basket! Ok, maybe contentment is not the look he has on his face, but I think the image is priceless!

I also captured what we call Oliver’s “duck face”, an expression he was using a lot back when he was three months old. It’s definitely good for a laugh!

Anyways, have a chuckle on us and enjoy the photos!

oliver connell | day sixty-eight – seventy

More fun pictures of Oliver! Woo hoo! This time around, we snapped some pictures of Oliver in his Baby Bjorn, looking all cool (and a little stunned!!) in his knitted hoodie. Then on day seventy, we had two opportunities to take some photos. First, Oliver was playing so nicely on his play mat that I couldn’t pass up the chance to capture the moment. Then, in the afternoon, for the first time, Oliver smiled back at us. I grabbed my camera quickly and sure enough, he did it again and I was able to seal the moment with a click of the shutter. He has such a beautiful smile. He’s going to be a real lady-killer!

Guess what? Its more pictures of our little guy! Like you would ever get tired of that! During this four day period, we took some pictures of Oliver celebrating his first days of 2009, then there are some cute ones of Oliver asleep in my arms. Finally, there was some vibrant window light coming in through Oliver’s window on day thirty six which allowed me to capture his beautiful blue eyes. There are some pictures below so you can see what I mean.

Dana, Oliver and I took some time one morning when the sun was streaming in through all the windows in the house to take some natural light photos. I was going for a very heavenly, angelic look to these photos as those were some of the thoughts that were going through my head at that time. When you become a Father for the first time, it’s strange; it’s hard to believe sometimes; it can be overwhelming; but you most certainly feel completely and utterly blessed for what you have in your life. This particular morning reflected those feelings in so many ways.

PS: The last photo really was the last photo for the day. Oliver had had enough of my sorry mug and a lens in his face for one day. Who could blame him?

oliver connell | day four – twenty

Having two weeks off from work really turned out well for us when Oliver was born. It gave me a chance to take the burden off of Dana and allow her to do what she desperately needed to do … recover. It also gave me the chance to document the first days of Oliver’s life. It was amazing! Even at a couple of days old, Oliver was already comfortable enough in front of the camera to allow his Daddy to put him in some …. uh …. strange situations. This is clearly seen from the “Real Life Garbage Pail Kid” image seen below. And for the record, no babies were harmed in the making of that image. LOL!

Day three saw us say goodbye to our new friends at Headwaters Hospital (website here) and take Oliver home for the first time. To think, in just 60 hours of Dana having major surgery, we were leaving the hospital and going home. I won’t get into the debate here, but it feels weird how quickly you are “shuffled” along and sent on your way. Nonetheless, we were ready to go.
