Day five hundred & sixty-seven saw us take a quick trip up to Mom & Dad Connell’s for the afternoon to celebrate Father’s Day. We only snapped a couple of photos this day, but they’re quite cute so I thought I would share them. We forgot Oliver’s highchair so we went Old School and had him sitting on the Yellow Pages. LOL! He actually seemed to like it! Gosh he is getting big quick!

Mother’s day every year is a hectic day for us that Connell household. We usually end up trying to cram in as much visiting as possible on this day, which means we are trekking across most of Ontario! This year was no exception as we spent the morning having brunch with Dana’s parents in Woodbridge, and then we headed up to Victoria Harbour to see my parents.

Once again, Oliver was just a doll the entire time – keeping us entertained with his big smiles and wonderful attitude. It can’t be easy for an 18-month old to spend that much time in a car on any given day, but Oliver seems to take it very well. We are very proud of him!

We spent boxing day with Grandma and Grandpaw in Victoria Harbour. It was a good day to eat some more scrumptious food (like we hadn’t had enough from the night before), sit and chat and enjoy each other’s company. Oliver played quite a bit with his Goldfish Crackers, and even took and “indoor sleigh ride” in his new sleigh he got for Christmas. We also had some family visitors. Oliver got to meet his Great Aunt Bev and Great Uncle Guy for the first time, and he played with his cousins Michelle, Bobby and Brittany.

Today is Oliver’s second Christmas. Santa has visited our house yet again and left some wonderful gifts for us all. Oliver’s favourite gift: a bag of Apple Crisps he got in his stocking. Clearly Santa knew what Oliver would like! Mum and Dad spent the rest of the morning opening the other gifts while Oliver ran around the living room with his crinkly bag of Apple Crisps. Ah, all in good fun.

Below are a couple of videos of Oliver enjoying his Christmas morning.

Then it was off to Grandma and Grandpaw’s for more presents and a Christmas dinner. Mom (Grandma) outdid herself once again. We had probably one the juiciest turkey I’ve ever tasted. We had a surprise visitor, my Auntie Karen for dinner and a visit. It was wonderful to see her again.

On this day, we celebrated Oliver’s first birthday with my parents. They brought some wonderful gifts for Oliver and it was of course, another great evening. Oliver has really taken to his Grandpaw, as you will see in these photos and some upcoming posts.

The Connell family cottage is located in Iron Bridge Ontario on a little lake called Chiblow. The cabin was built in 1934 and has been in our family for more than 30 years. I took my first trip up to the cottage at a very young age and it was only fitting that we did the same for Oliver. The long drive, coupled with the tight quarters, and the rustic methods of providing for our son, turned out to be a challenge this year with Oliver being at the age he was. But we hold faith that next year’s trip will be more relaxing for Dana and I.

As you can see from the pictures below, we most certainly had a good time at our hideaway in the North.

Father’s Day. A joyous occasion where we get together to celebrate being a Dad. This year was my first with Oliver and I had a great day! We celebrated by having our families over for a BBQ in our new backyard! The weather was wonderful and we enjoyed having a nice meal outside. The bugs weren’t even that bad, which was a blessing considering this summer was actually quite brutal for them.

Once again, Oliver and I had the morning to ourselves. Dana was off getting her hair done at Salon Soho in Sherway Gardens (see James, tell them Dana sent you Hahaha!) and Oliver and I had some fun together.

My Father speaks very highly of this one memory he has of when I was a little boy. He fondly tells the story of the first time he saw these little eyes peer over the coffee table at him. He said I pulled myself up, and all he could see were these tiny eyes, and then I came up a little further, grinning ear-to-ear. So with Father’s day quickly approaching, I thought I would try to recreate that scene, but now with two generations of Connells. I set up my camera on a tripod, set the timer for 10 seconds, and then ran around the other side of the table holding Oliver up at just the last second before the shutter opened and closed. It took a couple of tries, but I was very happy with the end result. And needless to say, my Father loved the gift.

Three words: Oliver’s First Christmas! What a blast we had! We thought the easiest thing to do would be to host both the Connell and the Ruprecht families at our house for Christmas Day dinner. Mom Ruprecht was kind enough to take the pressure off of me and bring the bird for dinner. Oliver, who was only twenty-six days at this point, didn’t really know what hit him. We managed to sneak in a couple portraits, but the rest of the time was for playing, laughing, and enjoying each others company.

oliver connell | day four – twenty

Having two weeks off from work really turned out well for us when Oliver was born. It gave me a chance to take the burden off of Dana and allow her to do what she desperately needed to do … recover. It also gave me the chance to document the first days of Oliver’s life. It was amazing! Even at a couple of days old, Oliver was already comfortable enough in front of the camera to allow his Daddy to put him in some …. uh …. strange situations. This is clearly seen from the “Real Life Garbage Pail Kid” image seen below. And for the record, no babies were harmed in the making of that image. LOL!
